The newest teaser for the upcoming movie “Golda” debuted on Tuesday and shows off Dame Helen Mirren’s remarkable transition into Israel’s first female prime minister Golda Meir.

In the introduction of the video, text that reads, “In 1973, the leader of the most contested region in the world is Golda Meir,” is flashed over the screen before Mirren appears as the influential political figure as she gets ready to address the state of Israel.

According to an official summary, the movie, which is based on a historical tale, is marketed as a “ticking-clock thriller” that revolves on Meir during a “tense 19 days” during the Yom Kippur War in 1973.

In the teaser, Liev Schreiber, who also undergoes a remarkable change into Henry Kissinger and appears to be unrecognizably in his presentation of the former US statesman, is seen engaging in furious sparring with a variety of contemporary actors, including Helen Mirren.

Israel was led by Meir as prime minister from 1969 to 1974. Although she was a significant figure in the world, it is reported that she carried the shame of the Yom Kippur War casualties with her till the end.

“Do you know how many people died?” Schreiber is heard asking Mirren in the trailer.

“All those boys, I will carry that pain to my grave,” she solemnly says in reply.

The movie “Golda” is not the first in which Mirren has played a prominent Jewish person. She co-starred with Ryan Reynolds in the 2015 drama “Woman in Gold” as Jewish refugee Maria Altmann; for this role, she was nominated for a SAG Award for best leading female actor.

Mirren, who won an Oscar for portraying a different head of state—Queen Elizabeth in 2006’s “The Queen”—faced criticism when her casting as Meir was revealed. Some people felt that Mirren, who is not Jewish, should have played the role instead of her.

The actress told the Daily Mail in 2022 that she had a “discussion” with “Golda” director Guy Nattiv about his decision to cast her despite the fact that she is not Jewish. However, she also asked, “If someone who is not Jewish can’t play Jewish, does someone who is Jewish play someone who is not Jewish?” in response to the criticism.

She said, “There’s a lot of terrible unfairness in my profession.”

As Lou Kaddar, Meir’s personal assistant, “House of Gucci” actor Camille Cottin co-stars in “Golda” with Schreiber and Mirren.

The August 25 premiere of “Golda” is scheduled.
